My enthusiasm has waned, should I change my goal?!

Over at the 100 Day Goal we’re on day 33, which is a huge one third of the way in! HURRAH! But it’s getting TOUGH and some of you are wondering whether you should change your goal. It’s a GOOD question, but before you throw it all in, read on….

dont let life change your goals 1

First up, I always say and totally believe, that you absolutely MUST want to achieve your goal.

It’s way too hard to work towards something you just don’t care about.

So if you set your goal to, say, sell 20 pieces of work and now you really don’t care whether you sell 20 pieces of work or not, then change your goal. And change it PRONTO!

Goals that we don’t care about do us more harm than good. It’s not the failure to achieve the goal that hurts (we’re numb to that because we don’t care) but it’s the horrible guilt we carry around when we’re NOT working on something that we said we would!

So get rid of the guilt, get shot of the goal, pick something new and start again.

BUT, but, but, but…

Before you do:

Think about WHY you picked your goal.

Let’s imagine you are an artist and you set your goal as selling 20 pieces of work. You picked this because you need to make sales to provide an income to allow you to continue to paint. Let’s imagine it’s now day 33 and you’re feeling very creative and have done lots of new works but nothing much towards your goal. You don’t like “selling” much and although you mapped out Microactions to help you reach your goal, you still don’t feel very inclined to do it.

Should you change your goal of selling 20 pieces or should you still work towards it?

I think the answer lies in WHY you set your goal in the first place.

If the WHY is still true (you still need the income from selling 20 pieces) then I think you should try super-hard to engage back in with your goal. But if your WHY is not true any more (you don’t need to sell 20 pieces of work) then change the goal!

Picking a goal is FUN and motivating. Working on a goal for the first few days and weeks is FUN and motivating. But then it gets HARD. Really HARD. And if you’re not seeing the results of your effort yet, it might feel like a painful slog.

BUT if you still WANT to achieve your goal, if the reason you set your goal – your WHY  – is still true. Then don’t change your goal. Change the way you get there, have another look at your Microactions, maybe take a break for a day and have a big think about HOW to reach your goal.

But don’t stop.

In 77 days you’ll be SO happy you carried on.

Really!

if the plan doesn't work
