Success!

Success!

I’m reading a very good book called “The Freaks Shall Inherit the Earth: Entrepreneurship for weird people” by Chris Brogan. There’s lots of interesting stuff in it, some of which I’ll pop into a blog post super-SOON! In the meantime though I totally loved this and thought you might TOO!

It’s about defining what ‘success’ means for you. I’ve tried lots of different ways of thinking about what  ‘success’ means for me and mostly, while I’ve quite enjoyed playing with different techniques, I haven’t really found something that totally works. You TOO?! Well, now I have!

In the book Chris Brogan talks about how his personal definition of success is “being able to say yes to what I want to do and no to what I don’t”.

Oh goodness. I love that.

I gave it a go and did a list of all the things I’d like to say yes to and all the things I’d like to say no to. And then I morphed it – just a little bit – so I ended up with two lists headed like this:

1. I’d like my business to enable ME to say yes to……
2. I’d like my business to enable ME to say no to….

I added the “my business” bit to make it feel less like a wish and more like a plan. And, oh it’s SO good. My lists are a lovely muddle of work and home stuff and it feels right because really my life is a muddle of home and work.

So I have things on my YES list like ‘be able to say ‘yes’ to a housekeeper a couple of days a week’ (indulgent yes, but goodness four kids make a LOT of mess!) and ‘say yes to a full time PA for my business’. And even though one is for home and one is for business both ‘YESes’ feel right sitting next to each other on my little list. I also have on my ‘yes’ list stuff that’s more about TIME than money. Like saying yes to ‘exercise every day’ and yes to ‘going to all school events for my kids’. Not amazing stuff but then again, this is about a definition of success for ME. Or you if you want to do the list too!

The really FAB thing I’ve found about doing these lists is that it’s given me something very tangible to work towards. Plus I realised that I could start doing some of the ‘yes’ and ‘no’ things pretty soon. Hurrah!

What about you? Fancy doing a Yes and No list too?!

this is quite old but wanted to comment. I love this idea, I really struggle with setting goals but I feel this is a great way for me to do that without it seeming like I have to create these amazing goals, it makes them achievable and tangible and matter to ME!
thanks Julia love it, and will start my list today
