Of course we’re only in September so it’s a wee bit early to be planning New Year celebrations, but when it comes to getting stuff done there are only 97 days until the end of the year.

And that got me thinking. Will I look back on 2012 and think (in a business sense) that  it was a fabulous year or will I be kicking myself for not having got more stuff done?

I know I’m not the only one who get’s to this time of the year and wonders where the time has gone. Many of us aren’t quite as on track as we’d like to be. Just to check I wasn’t alone I did a ring around of a few of my business owner friends and asked them what was still on their to-do list. Here’s a (sanitised) version of what they said:

“I thought my new product would be available for sale by now but I’ve been distracted by other stuff”

“I thought my new website would be up but I’ve just not got round to it”

“I hoped I’d have two more large clients but if I’m honest I’ve not done enough chasing of them!”

“I had meant to swap to a new accounting system but it’s still on the to-do list. I hate sorting out that kind of stuff!’

“I’d meant to do a monthly newsletter. Oops!’

So the bad news is that a few of our projects have slipped. The good news however is that we’ve got just the right amount of time left in 2012 to change that! 100 days

The human brain likes periods of 100 days (or thereabouts)  – it’s enough time to get stuff done but a short enough time to create a bit of urgency.

If we give ourselves much longer than 100 days we tend not to get started. We feel that we’ve got ages in which to do it and so….subconscious procrastination!

If we give ourselves less than 100 days, well we don’t get onto the big stuff as we feel there’s not enough time to get it done.

But 100 days, in a Goldilocks kind of way, is just right.

So today’s tip – with 97 days to go – is this. What are you going to do to make sure your business finishes 2012 in a fabulous way?

Come 31 December, you’ll be please you did it!

Remind me, how does this make my business more profitable?
If you want your business to be more profitable you have to do a few things differently. As Einstein said: Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. The trouble is that some of those new things to do are hard to fit into our already busy days. Hmm. This is just a little reminder to put them back at the top of the to-do list!
