A lovely way to explain who you are, what you do, and why you’re PRICEY

If you think a professional is expensive

Here’s something I like a LOT! Blogs, videos and stories about how YOU make your stuff!

It’s such a very clever thing to do. YES?!

Y’know most of us have no idea about what goes on behind the scenes of your jewellery-making, cake-decorating, photography, beauty, music, whatever, business…. at all! And when we raise our eyebrows at the PRICE of your stuff, it’s not because we don’t think it’s worth it. It’s because we don’t realise how special your stuff actually is.

TRUE!

If you think about it, the reason we buy from YOU is that we can’t do the stuff you do. But because we don’t know HOW to do it we also don’t know that it’s super-tricky and takes you AGES!

I know you might find that hard to believe because you’ve been doing this for so long. But really, we have absolutely NO idea how long it takes to make a cake that looks like a lion, a necklace from beach glass, or the process you go through to turn those pictures you took of us into a photo we’re going to be happy with!

So when we raise our eyebrows at your price it’s not because we don’t value what you do. It’s because we just DON’T KNOW the effort it takes.

But you can help us out! And it’s pretty simps too! Just show us a bit of what goes on behind the scenes of your business and how you make your stuff.

Here are four ACE examples of what I mean:

1. Write a blog about how you do it

I love this from Daisy Brydon Creations “Why does my Cake cost so much?” Oh My! Who knew that THAT was how you made a Lion cake?!

2.  Make a video about your story

Jane Blease of Jane Blease Design’s makes embroidered wood veneer lamp shades. Yup. Embroidered wood. Just watch her video and you’ll want one! YES?!

3. Share some knowledge about the process

Here’s Lyss from Blyss Chocolate explaining  how YOU can become a Chocolate Bean expert! Blyss Chocolate make very special ‘single bean virgin chocolate’ YUM!

4. Post the story step by step on Facebook

And it doesn’t have to be all videos and blog posts. I love how over on the Joanouk Fine Arts and Prints Facebook page you can see the story of THIS artwork coming together!

YOU can do this TOO!

YES! You can do a behind-the-scenes too! It’s such a fabulous way of explaining your work and it’s really not so hard! You can start small with Facebook posts or a Blog if the video thing feels a bit scary or expensive.

We customers  love discovering the real you and it makes us want to buy your stuff at the RIGHT price. Hurrah!

PS If you’ve got a behind-the-scenes story and fancy sharing it you can put a link to it in the comments! ♥

This is so true! Also, people really do find it interesting.
Here is a short video I made showing the process of using old gold jewellery to make a new ring. My client loved seeing the process….

I enjoyed reading this post as I have just started doing exactly this. I am documenting the process of quilting a quilt as I want to be paid properly for my skill so I figured that means teaching people about what I do. Thank you. Love Suzy
